Prompt #197

If you wish to do this as a spontaneous exercise, don't look at the word until you're ready to write (I recommend having Write or Die open in another tab). If you're going to mull over the word and write later, peek away.

Once you've completed your ficlet, please either comment here, or post a link to it, if you're posting on your own journal. Feel free to reference the community or number of the prompt in your outside posts, but if you use the actual word, please put it under a cut to avoid spoiling others, should they want to write spontaneously.

Today's word is: contortion

con┬Ětor┬Ětion [kuhn-tawr-shuhn]

1. the act or process of contorting.
2. the state of being contorted.
3. a contorted position.
4. something contorted or twisted, as in position or meaning: His account of the incident was a complete contortion of fact.

If you've missed a word or twelve and would like to catch up, please see the Master List.

Kill la Kill , Ryuko & Satsuki post finale

Ryuko showed up at the manor grounds around mid morning.

"You're late," said Satsuki. She walked down the incline to where Ryuko was standing in an elegant fashion, more suited to descending the staircase of a grand hall. Satsuki always seemed to move like that, even in battle.

Ryuko jammed her hands in her pockets. (It was strange, having pockets. Senketsu hadn't-) "Why did you call me out here?" she said. She eyed Satsuki spectulatively. "Family bonding?"

Satsuki's face didn't remain hard. Her mouth pulled up the corners, and her eyes softened, like they would have crinkled if she weren't so young and smooth. "Training, actually." There was an undertone of warmth in her voice.

"You know that we're the two most powerful people in the world, right?" said Ryuko.

"Does that mean we shouldn't train?" Satsuki countered smoothly. Ryuko didn't have anything to say to that. She fell into step behind Satsuki as she walked deeper into the woods on the mansion grounds. The trees got thicker and the shadows got darker, only to suddenly level out into a clearing. Considering that it was bordered by high trees on all sides, the clearing was surprising bright.

"Do you have a weapon?" asked Satsuki. She walked to the middle of the clearing and turned around to regard Ryuko. If it wasn't such a cloudy day, it would have been the ideal position to catch the light of the sun. Typical Satsuki, Ryuko thought. She stepped out of the shadows of the trees, hands still deep in her pockets. Satsuki's eyes lingered on them.

"We still aren't sure what happened to the scissor blade," said Ryuko. "It could still be in space. It could have fallen into the sea."

"It could be slowly degrading, just like the rest of the life fibers," Satsuki cut in, speaking softly. "If it hasn't been destroyed, we need to find it. But enough about that today; since you have no weapon, we'll fight bare handed."

Ryuko would have settled in a stance to match Satsuki's, but without much by way of formal training, she didn't know any. She wound up standing with her feet planted far apart, and leaning forward slightly. After a second of thought, she took her hands out of her pockets, too. Even from where she was standing, she could see the gleam of assessment in Satsuki's eyes. It made her feel unnerved.

"Three seconds," said Satsuki. Tension coiled tighter in Ryuko's belly as Satsuki's whisper soft voice seemed to fill the clearing. Two. One. Ryuko dove to side the instant the word zero was uttered, kicking up a surprisingly large cloud of dirt as she sprang away from her original position. It has been a blind instinct, and absolutely right. Satsuki was there immediately, newly short hair splattering against her cheek as she whipped her head around to track Ryuko's movements. Ryuko barely had time to think that this was unusual, that Satsuki preferred to wait for her opponents to strike first, before Satsuki was bearing down on her, ready to take advantage of Ryuko's position on the ground.

-- that's as far I got in 15 minutes. Hopefully I'll do a bit better next time.
