Prompt #41

If you wish to do this as a spontaneous exercise, don't look at the word until you're ready to write (I recommend having Write or Die open in another tab). If you're going to mull over the word and write later, peek away.

Once you've completed your ficlet, please either comment here, or post a link to it, if you're posting on your own journal. Feel free to reference the community or number of the prompt in your outside posts, but if you use the actual word, please put it under a cut to avoid spoiling others, should they want to write spontaneously.

Today's word is: mantra

If you've missed a word or twelve and would like to catch up, please see the Master List

Not Today

"You're beautiful," she says into the mirror because she is.

"You're smart," she replies to her reflection, her glasses falling slightly off the bridge of her nose.

"You're worthy of love," she whispers because her heart is wide and open with so much love to give.

She repeats all the platitudes she read in her Glamour magazine and then gets ready for school and walks out the door.

"You're ugly," the guy slouched against a locker says as she passes.

"You're an idiot," says the boy she disagreed with in class.

"No one likes you," the cheerleader says to her in the locker room after gym class.

She ignores it all. In the end, they don't matter. In the end, she'll leave and they'll be the ones stuck in this go nowhere town and she'll be the one who's successful and rich and liked.

It's what she tells herself anyway. Over and over again. Repeats it in the mirror every morning before school and waits until she believes it, until the message sinks in.

"Don't listen to them, honey." Her mother stops stirring the pasta sauce for a moment to look at her. "If they can't see that you're special, then they're not worth your time."

"I know, Mom."

And she does. She's just waiting for the day she'll believe it.

It's not today.
