Prompt #196

If you wish to do this as a spontaneous exercise, don't look at the word until you're ready to write (I recommend having Write or Die open in another tab). If you're going to mull over the word and write later, peek away.

Once you've completed your ficlet, please either comment here, or post a link to it, if you're posting on your own journal. Feel free to reference the community or number of the prompt in your outside posts, but if you use the actual word, please put it under a cut to avoid spoiling others, should they want to write spontaneously.

Today's word is: indigo

indigo in·di·go

noun, plural in·di·gos, in·di·goes.
1. a blue dye obtained from various plants, especially of the genus Indigofera, or manufactured synthetically.
2. indigo blue (def 2).
3. any of numerous hairy plants belonging to the genus Indigofera, of the legume family, having pinnate leaves and clusters of usually red or purple flowers.
4. a color ranging from a deep violet blue to a dark, grayish blue.

adjective
5. Also called indigo-blue, indigotic. of the color indigo.

If you've missed a word or twelve and would like to catch up, please see the Master List.

"Is it the color?" Alex says, holding up the skimpy little number up against Dylan, her eyes narrowing in concentration. Dylan knows she's analyzing the shade, going past all their previous times dressing up as hot chicks on the club circuit for a case or, as it might turn out, for a club circuit. They know each other's likes and dislikes backwards and forwards by now.

"It's, like, between indigo and electric blue," Natalie supplies after the quickest glance. Alex is better at analysis, but Natalie's brain is a storage hall of random information. "She likes indigo, not electric blue."

"Right, the red one, then?" says Alex and shifts through the pile of dresses spread out in a mess on the bed.

"Girls, stop," says Dylan. Shit, he's been lucky, hasn't he? It just never came up before. And maybe he's made sure to get out of town on the days when he felt this way but... this time it really is tell the truth or lie. He takes a deep breath. "No dress. Not a good day for it." And he tells them.

The girls glance at each other. Alex knew, he can tell; or at least suspected. Natalie's face breaks into that hundred-watt, light-up-the-sky smile. "Oh my God. The purple and chartreuse suit."

"NO."

"YES."
